Market Cross - Penzance -

Dimensions of Market Cross |

One of the most unusual Cornish Crosses found in West Penwith. It was first recorded at the Greenmarket in Penzance. In 1829 the cross was moved a short distance to the corner of a house in Causeway Head. When this house was pulled down the cross was moved again to the West of the Market House. It remained there until 1899 when it was moved to Morrab Gardens only to be shifted yet again to Penlee Gardens where it remains today. One could say a very moving story. It has been beautifully set up and is definately worth a visit. It resides next to a Museum, Art Gallery and Bistro. You will not find a more comfortable place, on a sunny day in the summer, to view a very nice example of a very fine granite cross. |

Historic reports suggest that Market Cross is in fact a lot older than the market that grew up around it. It has been suggested that the cross was first erected circa 1050AD at a spot near or in St Clare cemetery which coincides with suggestions that it was designed to mark a burial ground in the Alverton area of Penzance. The cross is made entirely from granite and has carvings on all sides. Click Here for a larger image |
