Churchyard Cross in the Parish of Paul

This cross is built into the churchyard wall and is over 1000 years old. The head of the cross appears to be part of the huge granite stone set in the wall beneath, which is probably a Neolithic standing stone believed to be approximately 4000 years old. Men and women have worshipped God at this place for millenia.

The first church at Paul was built by Saint Paul de Lyon, a welshman born in 490AD. The church has one of the tallest towers in Cornwall with a small beacon tower set on top. In times of emergency fires were lit on top of beacons and beacon towers. The story is that signals could be sent from Lands End to London in 20 minutes. From the top of the tower eleven churches can be seen on a clear day.

The left hand picture shows the front view of the cross resting on the stone wall at the churchyard in Paul and the right hand picture shows the rear view displaying 5 raised hemispheres.
